About Steve Toops

Welcome to Tarrant Valley Honey!
I’m Steve Toop, beekeeper and founder of Tarrant Valley Honey. My story with bees began in an unexpected place – after a near-fatal collapse at home. It changed me. I needed something calm, something real, something that didn’t require screens or schedules.
Beekeeping was that thing.
I’ve always been fascinated by bees. I’m dyslexic and struggled at school, but a brilliant teacher, Mr Spring – to whom I’m forever grateful – introduced me to environmental studies. The school kept ducks, chickens and bees, and I was able to learn in a practical way which suited me much better.
When I left school, I worked as a dairy hand. But after the incident at home, I realised I needed something calmer, where I could be alone. No mobile phone and away from the pressures of modern-day farming. Most people would probably opt for yoga, but I chose to surround myself with thousands of bees!
(see a full interview with me in The BV here)
Initially, I invested in two garden hives. I joined a local beekeeping club, gained a first qualification and continued my studies.
After chatting with my farm bosses James and Barbara Cossins, they loaned me field corners for my expanding number of hives: the bees now play a valuable role on the farm. During what’s known as ‘the spring flow’, they are moved around the fields to pollinate crops.

Team dog
He may sound fierce from afar, but up close he’s all wiggles, wags and enthusiasm. More bounce than buzz, and utterly convinced he runs the place.
